As I understand it, they are only important if you're hoping to get traffic from search engines.

From Wikipedia:

“A canonical link element is an HTML element that helps webmasters prevent duplicate content issues in search engine optimization by specifying the ‘canonical’ or ‘preferred’ version of a web page.”

It basically tells Google which copy of your story is the master copy and should be shown in Google results.
