Yeah, "publish or perish" is a real problem, as is publication bias (a.k.a. the file drawer effect), and the replication crisis in psychology and other fields. As you rightly hint at, science is more than the scientific method. It's also a social and human activity and thus has some of the same problems all human endeavors have. Still, it's the best tool we have to unravel reality and, contrary to so many other human endeavors, it's self-correcting in the long-term (even if there are plenty of hiccups along the way).
