I’m not sure where I heard this, but if someone comments and you don’t acknowledge their comment, it’s somewhat equivalent to someone stretching out their hand and you just letting them stand there, without shaking it. If you do that to someone, you’re in a sense being rude and shouldn’t be surprised if you lose them to a writer who does shake hands.
