Ha! I've said that. But I get that the challenge is more about publicity than rewarding consistent writers.

Anyway, Linda, do you happen to know how Vocal is financed? I mean, where is the money coming from that they're paying out to creators?

On Medium it seems to be clear. Most of the money comes from subscribers and most of the subscribers are readers only--not writers themselves (even though it might not seem like it if you're still in a writer bubble and haven't been able to reach the masses yet).

But from what I've seen, Vocal seems to be entirely free for readers and it's writers who get charged when they become Vocal+ subscribers. That seems to me a business model that relies on writers cannibalizing each other, i.e., it sounds like for you to make money on Vocal, you necessarily have to take money directly out of the pockets of other writers.

In other words, Medium seems to be financed by readers while Vocal seems to be financed by failing writers who have a Vocal+ subscription. Is that right or am I missing something?
