This is just speculation on my part, but I think there was simply no evolutionarily benefit for women to produce fertile eggs until late in their life, whereas there was a benefit for men. And the reason there was one for men and not for women is that babies can reach adulthood with old fathers (even dead fathers), whereas babies were unlikely to reach adulthood if their mothers only had a few more years to live.
