Hey JJ Lim, excellent questions!

Fabi keeps her FUD in a plastic Ziploc bag and the Ziploc bag within a little pouch where she also has a bit of toilet paper and hand sanitizer. Everything that needs cleaning she cleans with the toilet paper and then she either uses hand sanitizer or water from a bottle to clean her hands. It’s probably more hygienic than what most of us guys do after peeing somewhere outdoors (how many of us use hand sanitizer after that?). Then in the evening, when we’re back at a hotel room, she washes the FUD and Ziploc bag with water.

As to UTIs, she never had a problem. Some sources even suggest that not drinking enough water and holding your pee for long periods of time may increase the risk of getting a UTI. Here is an example of such a source:

So far, there is no definitive evidence that the susceptibility for UTI is dependent on fluid intake. Nevertheless, adequate hydration is important and may improve the results of antimicrobial therapy in UTI. Results of experimental and clinical studies concerning urinary hydrodynamics are the basis for advice given by expert committees to patients with UTI to drink large volumes of fluid, void frequently, and completely empty the bladder.

It seems to be pretty speculative, but if it’s true that holding your pee may increase the risk of a UTI, then a FUD could actually decrease the risk of an UTI. But neither of us is a health professional. So don’t quote us on that :)

One thing Fabi told me to add is that it takes a little bit of practice to pee with a FUD. So she recommends practicing at home first.

Hope that helps!
