As to internal branching, you’re probably referring to Folgezettel.

There is some ongoing debate about whether the Folgezettel that Luhmann used was just the result of the physical implementation of his Zettelkasten or whether they provide some additional value. Here, for example, are various points of view:

I also seem to remember that there was one digital tool out there that implemented Folgezettel, but I forgot which one (sorry).

Either way, I’ve actually never given Folgezettel too much thought. Maybe I’m missing out on something, but I’m getting by without them and I think they’re unnecessary.
