I fully agree, Ryan. If you can afford it, just write what you’re excited about and forget about the “dumb” masses.

So I’m with you and that’s why I keep writing sciencey pieces on obscure topics, even though they mostly die a pitiful death.

But if you’re trying to make a living from your writing, I think it’s worth throwing a few Sandler movies in occasionally, just to make sure you’re not missing out on some writing you could do that have better chances of paying your bills.

In the end, your less sophisticated pieces may even benefit your more ambitious ones. After all, it’s easier to write something great when you’re well-fed and the water is no longer pouring on you because you live under a leaky roof ;-)
