I know what you mean about some writers being cold fish. The analogy I've heard is that if you leave a comment and they don't respond in any way whatsoever it's sort of like stretching out your hand and they, instead of shaking it, just ignore you. It's rude.

Also, I think they are missing out. It's generally fun interacting with one's readers :)
