It's not as if people are goldfish in general. The same person might enjoy a slow-paced novel while sitting in their armchair next to a fireplace during a holiday, but then not have the patience for such writing on a busy workday when they are reading blog posts on their smartphone in short bursts throughout the day.
The thing is, most people reading on the Internet are busy and don't have fireplaces. So if you want to maximize your audience (which is fine if you don't), you're better off targeting busy people with limited time because that's most of us.
