Sorry, had to check another one of those cat videos.

Where was I? Ah, yes. Although not getting distracted can make you more productive, I actually think distractions are important for you as a creative.

Now, don’t get me wrong, by this I don’t mean you should be checking cat videos every two minutes. Nor do I mean you should use a tornado siren as the notification sound on your smartphone. And I most definitely don’t mean you should find a five-year-old, give it two sugary espressos, a trumpet, and then chain it to your leg.

All I mean is that to remain creative you need to focus for an extended period of time, but then distract yourself completely. It’s this idea of going about your work not the way a grazing zebra goes about eating, but the way a lion does: long sessions of chilling and relaxing followed by focused hunting…
