Yeah, absolutely, the instincts hijacked by supernormal stimuli had its role in the past — otherwise they almost certainly wouldn’t have been passed down through the generations. It’s just that they don’t always serve us well in the modern world.

PS: being “captivated by things that change continuously” is also largely explained by the orienting reflex, another thing TV exploits with its constants cuts and scene changes and which helped our ancestors survive.
