One way I can foresee gold prices crashing and never recovering is if we get into asteroid mining and start bringing massive amounts back to Earth. Then gold would suffer the same fate as aluminum did, which before modern extraction methods, was shortly considered more valuable. But I don't expect that to happen within our lifetime.
