That’s an interesting point, Ronald! But keep in mind that if avocado seeds were smaller, then they could be eaten by lots of other animals. And that might not be an evolutionary advantage to the avocado. For instance, some animals might have a tendency to crush the seeds or their stomach acids might be too strong. So it’s not always in a plants best interest to have their fruits and seeds eaten by anyone. Many plants just want their seeds to be targeted to one particular type of animal and not “waste” their seeds on other animals for various reasons. Having big seeds is one way for a plant to be selective about who gets access to the seeds. Thorns and various poisons might be another way.
But the melon is an interesting example. I wonder why they are so big and still have small seeds. To find out, we would first have to know if they are so big by nature, or if they are just so big because humans have bred them to be large…
