The main reward is that I have found an audience of people who enjoy reading my words. And that’s a nice reward!
Financially, though, it hasn’t really paid off so far. I mean, I’m doing this full-time and I am earning somewhere around $200 to $300 per month on Medium, which is about the same I often earned when I had less than 2,000 followers.
So it is a little weird that on Medium going from 2,000 followers to over 23,000 followers doesn’t seem to make any difference whatsoever in earnings.
Others, with over 100,000 followers, have said similar things.
My explanation for this is that Medium no longer is the same platform it was when I started. They distribute stories differently, rely a lot more on algorithms, and far less on human curation. So it's a little like we're all competing on a stage that's constantly being rebuilt under our feet.
I’ve also heard people say that Medium nowadays pays less per read than they used to. I don’t know, though, since I don’t really check my stats.
So, yeah, sorry to disappoint, but I’m not getting rich here 😅
