The technical term for what you describe is cumulative advantage or Matthew Effect. It's the rich get richer phenomenon where those at the top stay at the top not because they're necessarily better, but because they've accumulated so many advantages that newcomers just can't compete (even though the newcomers may be more competent, creative, etc).
